Happier at Work podcast on Managing a Distributed Workforce

I was delighted to be interviewed by Aoife O’Brien from Happier at Work for her podcast. We discussed managing a Distributed Workforce; one where some of the team are full time in the office, some are full time at home and some work between home and office.

Some of the themes we discussed include:

  • You cannot manage a distributed workforce in the same way as a workforce who are 100% in the office

  • Leaders need to be deliberate in how they change their management style

  • Managers need to move to measuring outputs not inputs.

  • We cannot micromanage our workforce; don’t manage time, manage achievement

  • Technology is an enabler of remote working but it should not drive it; spending 8 hours a day on a screen is not effective for you or your team

  • We need to recreate the moments that allow the Social Dynamics in the workplace as these lead to the Influencing and Creative Dynamics that drive productivity
